America wasn't great because of the 'magical' document we call the Constitution or the Enlightenment principles. America became great because of its people. A nation is its people, and if you replace the people of a country, you should not expect the same nation.
It is extremely naive to think that you can change the input of something and expect the same output. It never has worked with anything and it never will.
In this clip, Vivek rightly says that Western culture is the best. But where does he think Western culture comes from? What type of people do they represent?
The 'melting pot' theory, which was originally coined by a Jewish writer named Israel Zangwill, only worked to some degree when America was made up of people with similar ancestry.
In fact, they ditched the cultural identity of the northern and western European countries they came from to adopt a new American identity. Subsequent generations of these people assimilated well.
The remaining generations of these people have shared culture, history, experiences, and language.
It is for this reason that for most of American history, up until the late 1960s, we made sure that the vast majority of our immigration came from northern and western Europe.
It wasn't until 1965 that the people in power decided that this immigration policy was 'racist.'
On one hand, people like Vivek and others on the controlled opposition right push the idea of 'multiracial working-class populism,' but on the other hand, they admit that Western culture is the best culture. But where does Western culture come from? What is the West?
They refuse to admit that Western culture and white culture are the same. Western culture is white culture. Western, white culture is the majority culture into which non-whites assimilate today. And they're better off for it.
If you replace the majority population and their culture, you no longer have a nation.
Mathieu Bock-Côté, a popular sociologist talked recently on a Canadian news show and had this to say:
“When a society predominantly receives new populations it cannot integrate (…) the conditions are there for conflicts, cultural and identity tensions..." There is for example, a difference in schooling levels, in the level of morals, all of which lead to a logic of social fragmentation..." For confidence to exist, generally, the first condition is similarity, similarity in terms of race, terms of culture."
In the largest study ever done on this topic in America, researchers found that in the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as they do in the most homogenous settings. Another Swedish study concluded the same.
Bill Maher’s comments on diversity, as highlighted in a tweet by Vincent James, have reignited a polarizing cultural debate.
In a short story about his childhood, Maher basically said that diversity is a weakness not a strength, and that it has made America more dangerous and less trusting.
This aligns with broader discussions supported by the 2007 New York Times article citing a Harvard study, which found that greater diversity can lead to lower community trust and civic engagement.
Maher’s stance taps into a growing sentiment among some who question whether diversity inherently strengthens society or, as he suggests, complicates collective action.
The remarks also land amid ongoing conversations about demographic changes in the U.S.
This shift, accelerated by policies like the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, has fueled debates over immigration and integration and underscored a tension that continues to shape America’s social landscape.
Comedian Trevor Noah has stirred controversy with recent remarks on diversity, as highlighted in another tweet by Vincent James.
